She asked Julian, "What happens if I don't go to the wedding?"

"What could happen?" Julian said languidly. "He'll just misunderstand and think you still have feelings for him."

"Speaking of weddings," Evelyn piped up, "what's the hold-up with you two? Haven't the preparations been going on for a while?"

Amanda was also puzzled. "With all the people and resources of the Durantin family, it should have been ready in no time."

Isabel hadn't even wanted a wedding in the first place.

It was Julian who had insisted.

All eyes turned to Julian, who chuckled. "I'm not the one planning the wedding. For all I know, my father-in-law isn't ready to marry off his daughter so soon."

"You haven't asked Miles?" Isabel felt that her supposed cousin loved organizing this sort of thing.

Julian pointed to his abdomen. "I don't even know if I'll be dead tomorrow. Where would I find the time to worry about that?"

But since the topic had come up, he gave Miles a call.

Miles insisted, "I'm not just making accusations. It was definitely that Blackwell guy. My aunt and uncle got hit too."

"What happened?" Isabel couldn't help but ask. She had a strong affinity for Mr. and Mrs. Ashford, though she didn't know why she felt such a close connection. "Are they okay?"

"They're fine physically, just a bit busy," Miles said, his tone becoming more serious when he heard Isabel's voice. "Cousin, this guy is clearly targeting us because of you. I just found out. Since he has ties to the Grey Zone, you should stay far away from him. Don't get hurt."

Isabel didn't understand what Adrian was trying to do.

He had been acting so erratically lately, she felt like she had never known the man at all.

"What are you sorry for?" Miles said, exasperated. "I'm telling you this to warn you to be careful, not for you to apologize. By the way, your wedding is all set. The venue is at our family estate; there's a ballroom specifically for these events. The wedding dress has arrived too. Come by and try it on when you have time. If it works for you, next Friday is an auspicious day to hold the ceremony."
