Adrian did not stay the night at the family estate. He took Selena and Oliver back to Halcyon Hills Residence.
Selena noticed the two sheets of paper in his hand. “Adrian, what’s that you’re holding?”
“Some company documents.” Adrian folded the papers and tucked them into the inner pocket of his suit jacket.
Selena tactfully dropped the subject.
Once they arrived at Halcyon Hills Residence, Adrian went to his study and tossed the two divorce agreements into the bottom drawer of his desk.
He had been blocked by Isabel, so he asked Martha for her phone.
He called her.
Now that Isabel was back at the lab, she kept her phone off silent in case someone called about work.
Seeing it was Martha, she answered, assuming she needed to ask about something.
Instead, she heard a familiar, cold male voice.
“Isabel, I don’t care what you’re trying to do, but there’s a limit to these tantrums.”
Isabel was bewildered. “I have no idea what you’re talking about.”
Adrian: “Stop running to Grandma with every little thing to get her on your side. She’s old, and her heart is weak. If something happens, can you take responsibility for that?”
His voice was frigid, laced with fury. “Or what, do you have another mother with a matching heart lying around?”
“Have you lost your mind?” Isabel’s own anger flared. “What is this nonsense you’re spouting! I haven’t done anything to upset Grandma, so don’t you dare accuse me without knowing the facts!”
“And another thing, my mother did nothing wrong. I was the one who used her heart to marry you. She's gone. Direct your anger at me, but leave her out of it!”
Adrian loosened his tie, his voice growing even colder. “Don’t say I didn’t give you a chance. You can have your job, but you will be back at Halcyon Hills Residence by tomorrow night.”
“Don't worry. Our marriage was private; not many people know about it. After the divorce is finalized, I won’t go around announcing it. I’ll clear things up with Grandma, too. I will make absolutely sure that Selena isn’t labeled a homewrecker, and that Grandma doesn’t stop you from getting married.”
Adrian let out a cold snort. “And what about what you said at the dinner table today? Isabel, your words have zero credibility.”
He added, “You’d better stop this nonsense and come back. If I hear one more word of this gets back to Grandma... I may not be able to touch your lab, but I can certainly make life difficult for you and everyone you work with. I can promise you that.”
Isabel’s lungs ached with frustration.
If she had known, she never would have indulged in that verbal sparring match at the Blackwell dinner table.
Now, she was trapped.
She took a deep breath, forcing her anger down.
She tried to reason with him.
“I can give you my word. Or we can get it notarized on video. After the divorce is finalized, I will keep it completely confidential. I won’t harm Selena, and I won’t upset Grandma.”
