Though Alexander was the eldest brother, his position didn't afford him the same freedom as Adrian. If Sophie were sent abroad, he might only see her once a year, if that.

Seeing that her own father wasn't siding with her, and thinking about Adrian’s methods, Sophie had no choice but to apologize reluctantly. “Aunt Isabel, I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have said those things to you.”

Isabel didn’t respond. Oliver was holding on too tightly. She whispered a few words to him, adjusted her position, and reached for the blanket that had slipped off.

Just as she reached for it, another hand moved faster.

Adrian picked up the blanket, shook it out, and then draped it over both of them.

Then he turned to the rest of the Blackwells. Except for the old matriarch, who couldn't come out so late in a snowstorm, everyone was there.
