Isabel hadn't noticed.
After having dinner with Amanda and her son, she and Dylan went to the herb garden.
“This garden is so well-kept. Have you been getting your supplies for experiments from here all these years?”
Dylan nodded and said, “This belongs to the Walsh family.”
The Walsh family?
Isabel remembered hearing that Henry Walsh and Adrian were good friends.
She had seen him a few times, but Adrian had always kept her from his inner circle.
His friends disliked her, too.
They thought she had used her mother's heart to force him into marriage, ruining his relationship with Selena.
But Selena had always insisted they were just like siblings.
Then again, she had no one to blame but herself.
She had been a fool to believe it.
“Are you partners with the Walsh family?”
Dylan, who was selecting the herbs he needed, looked at her. “Aren't you picking any?”
Isabel couldn’t conduct any experiments yet; she was only assisting Dylan. “I’ll get some when I can get back to work.”
The herbs Dylan chose were similar to what she would have picked. The rest required procedures she couldn't perform, so taking them would be useless.
Some formulations and techniques were things you had to feel, not just read about.
“Alright, then. Let’s go.”
Isabel was confused. “Why did you bring me along just to pick some herbs?”
She had thought it was something important.
Dylan smiled and tapped her on the forehead. “Because you’re my assistant, Isabel.”
“...” Isabel couldn’t help but shoot him a sideways glance.
After the two of them drove off, Henry emerged from behind a fence, holding a phone to his ear, his tone teasing. “Adrian, I just saw Isabel getting cozy with some guy. And Selena’s back—I hear you two are inseparable. Looks like you can finally get rid of that wife of yours. Congratulations.”
Adrian’s voice was as cold as ever. “You have too much time on your hands?”
Henry replied, “I’m just looking out for you. We can't have you being cuckolded before the divorce is final. What would that do to your reputation, Mr. Blackwell?”
Adrian hung up.
Henry stroked his chin.
Interesting.
Isabel’s heart dropped, and she immediately grew nervous. “I’m not ready...”
Her hand hadn’t even fully healed.
The old man had tried so hard to get her to stay, and she had completely dismissed him.
Now she was crawling back, injured and unable to do anything.
“What are you afraid of? He’s not going to eat you.”
Isabel sighed. “I’m too ashamed to face him.”
“Come on.” Dylan clapped her on the shoulder, dangling his car keys. “You have to see him sooner or later.”
He was right.
Once she decided to return to the lab, this meeting was inevitable.
After all, it was the old man who had backed the lab, found the funding to build it.
At the time, it was all for her.
And yet she...
“Don’t overthink it.” Dylan started the car. “The old man isn’t petty enough to hold that against you.”
