“Then you can wait to die.” Adrian’s eyes were filled with a murderous rage as he stared at Isabel. “Do you think you can escape if I die?”
Isabel remained perfectly calm. “You have no proof I did it. The hospital can’t find any trace of toxins in your system. They’ll just rule it as cellular necrosis—a natural phenomenon. You can’t blame me.”
That seemed to give Adrian pause. He motioned for Daniel to go ask.
Adrian had collapsed, coughing up blood, at the Blackwell Group headquarters. Daniel had brought him here, and with the situation still unclear, he couldn't leave.
Catching Adrian's glance, he immediately went to inquire.
The results were exactly as Isabel had described.
“Even so, I won’t let you get away with this!” Mrs. Blackwell’s eyes were red with anger. “Isabel, if anything happens to my son, you’ll pay with your life.”
“Quiet down,” Old Mrs. Blackwell said. “You can scream all you want, but do you have a solution? If not, then stop making empty threats.”
Isabel looked at the old woman. “You should go home and rest. Don’t stay up all night here.”
Old Mrs. Blackwell gestured for Susan to help her leave, but Mrs. Blackwell blocked their path. “Mom, I’ve held my tongue out of respect for you, but I’ve had enough. You forced Adrian to marry this jinx, and look at the disaster she’s brought upon the Blackwell family!”
“I never forced your son,” Old Mrs. Blackwell said calmly. “You know him better than I do. Is he someone who can be forced into anything?”
“If he was, he would have divorced her long ago.”
It was true for getting married, and it was true for getting a divorce.
No one had ever been able to control Adrian’s choices. The power had always been in his own hands.
“Impossible,” Mrs. Blackwell said, refusing to believe it. “Why would Adrian ever agree to get married willingly?”
“Not only that,” Old Mrs. Blackwell added, “he’s a smart man. Do you really think he didn’t know I was putting something in his soup?”
It had all been his choice.
But seeing how things had ended up, Old Mrs. Blackwell couldn’t help but feel disappointed in him.
He had driven away a good wife, and even now, he hadn't said a single conciliatory word.
