"I won't be making you breakfast anymore," she said calmly. "You're five years old now. You can't be a picky eater forever. You'll eat what Martha makes for you."
Oliver was not pleased. "You're a bad mom! You're just mad because I went to see Auntie Selena yesterday, and now you won't even cook for me! Bad mommy!"
Isabel felt a pang in her chest, but the mention of Selena's name was enough to steady her resolve.
"Young master, you shouldn't say that," Martha interjected. "Have you forgotten that your mother's right hand is injured?"
"What does that matter?" Oliver retorted hotly. "Mom still has another hand! And Martha usually helps her make breakfast anyway, so why can't she make it for me today?"
"What's going on?"
Isabel was about to hang up. She knew Oliver; when he didn't get his way, he'd throw a terrible tantrum, and she was in no mood to deal with it today. But just then, she heard Adrian's voice.
"Daddy!" Oliver whined, his little face flushed with anger. "Mom says she's never making me breakfast again! It's just like you said, she's mad because I went to see Auntie Selena! Mom is so petty!"
Adrian, assuming Isabel was still sulking over her hand, handed his phone to Oliver. On the screen was Selena's face. Oliver's expression instantly brightened into a wide smile. "Auntie Selena, you're awake!"
Selena's voice was gentle. "Would you like to come have breakfast with me?"
"Yes!"
"But all I have is hospital food. It's very plain, are you okay with that?"
Oliver grabbed Adrian's phone and ran for the door. "As long as I'm with you, Auntie Selena, I'll eat anything!"
Dylan reached out and gave her a light thump on the head. It was harder than she expected.
Isabel was stunned. "What was that for?"
"To knock some sense into you," Dylan said, pointing at her. "It's obvious you're still hung up on him."
"I'm not," Isabel denied.
Dylan didn't look convinced.
Isabel couldn't find the words to explain it to him. She truly wasn't holding on anymore. But she had loved Adrian for a decade, and she had raised their child from infancy. They had filled her entire heart. Ripping them out all at once had left a gaping hole. It would take time to stitch it closed.
