At nine o'clock, a nurse called Isabel for her pre-op tests. As she and Dylan left the room, they came face-to-face with Adrian and Selena.
Selena looked frail, seated in a wheelchair that Adrian himself was pushing. He was dressed in a tailored black suit, looking tall, handsome, and impossibly cold. The only time his expression softened was when he looked at Selena.
Isabel didn't see Oliver; he had probably gone to kindergarten after breakfast. She coolly averted her gaze and turned towards the examination room.
Dylan, having no interest in the spectacle, followed her.
"Isabel," Selena called out. Isabel didn't respond. The next second, her injured right hand was seized in a tight grip, sending a tremor of pain through her.
"Oh, Adrian, be careful," Selena chided gently. "Isabel's hand is hurt."
Adrian released his grip. As his gaze shifted back to Selena, it seemed to linger for a moment on Dylan, who was protectively shielding Isabel.
Selena wheeled herself closer, reaching for Isabel's right hand to inspect it. "Are you okay?"
Isabel pushed her hand away and turned to leave.
Selena blocked her path, a small smile on her face. "Are you still angry about yesterday? I'm so sorry I caused a misunderstanding between you and Adrian. But you're a married couple; you should sit down and communicate properly. You shouldn't throw around the word 'divorce' so easily, it's hurtful. Also, no matter how angry you are, you shouldn't get so close to other men. It will only make the misunderstanding worse."
After all, she had already signed the divorce papers. It would all be over soon. Right now, her hand was her priority. It was trembling slightly from the pain. Adrian must not have held back at all when he grabbed her.
Not wanting to waste any more time, she took Dylan's arm and left.
Selena sighed dramatically. "It seems Isabel is still mad at me. Adrian, you should buy her a nice gift to cheer her up. I remember she loves collecting all sorts of plants. Doesn't Henry's House have that beautiful botanical field? You could find a lovely plant there for her."
"No need," Adrian said, his gaze pulling away from where Isabel's hand rested on Dylan's arm. His voice was unreadable. "And you don't need to waste your time explaining things to her anymore. She's unreasonable. It's pointless."
