For the next few days, Isabel stayed at home.

Old Mr. Foster had visitors coming to pay their respects.

But with her name previously struck from the family records and her right hand now injured, it would be awkward for her to be introduced.

She preferred the peace and quiet.

As promised, she bought some gifts and went over to Amanda’s for a home-cooked meal.

Dylan, also eager to avoid the formal visits, tagged along.

“Auntie Isabel, Happy New Year!”

Leo opened the door. The little boy had large, bright eyes, fair skin, and chubby cheeks, looking like a porcelain doll.

Isabel couldn’t resist pinching his cheek. “You already wished me a happy new year on the phone, and I already gave you your gift money. You can’t ask for more, you little rascal. But I did bring you a toy. It’s your favorite—a big Lego airplane. Go on and play with it.”

Leo was overjoyed but glanced at Amanda, silently asking for permission.

His eyes were filled with longing.

Amanda nodded. After Leo ran off to play, she said, “You shouldn’t have spent the money.”

“It’s nothing, really,” Isabel replied.

“You haven’t been earning money for years. Now that you’re divorced and living on your own, you should save up.”

Isabel followed her into the kitchen. “I know what I’m doing.”

Amanda knew her junior well enough not to press the issue.

Besides, it was the holidays, a time for happiness.

“Honey, I got the soy sauce for the salad you wanted.”

Andrew came in from outside, saw Isabel, and gave her a slight nod.

Isabel returned the gesture with a small smile.

Things had been a bit awkward the last time she’d brought Amanda home.

But it was a testament to how strong their marriage was.

It was the kind of warm, loving family atmosphere she envied and longed for.

“Weren’t you saying you wanted to get into the pharmaceutical industry?” Amanda gestured toward Dylan, who was playing with Leo in the living room. “Go ask him. If his Y-2 project is a success, maybe he’ll give you priority access.”

Andrew’s interest was clearly piqued. “Y-2 is ready?”

“Go ask him yourself,” Amanda said.

Isabel had been fine when she left on New Year's Eve.

“It was Selena, wasn’t it!”

Isabel’s lips curved into a smile. “You’re so smart, senior.”

“Don’t you dare get cheeky with me!”

Realizing the truth, and seeing his wife was angry, Andrew quickly retreated back to the living room.

He asked Dylan for more details.

Dylan’s expression darkened. “She was my partner once. That right hand is crucial to her work. Someone injured it, and now she might not even be able to hold a test tube steady.”

Back in the kitchen.

As the chicken stew simmered, Amanda stood with her arms crossed, her posture demanding a full confession.

If she didn't get it, Isabel wasn't getting any dinner.

Isabel found the situation both amusing and touching. “It was Selena. But because of this, Adrian, who had been dragging his feet on the divorce, finally agreed. I got funding for a lab, a hundred-million-dollar apartment, and five percent of the Blackwell Group’s shares.”

Amanda was about to say, “And you think compensation is enough? Do you know how important that hand is to you?”
