Back at the main table, Selena handed Oliver a slice of chocolate cake, soothing him gently. “Have something to eat. This is your great-grandmother’s eightieth birthday; it’s very important. We can go find your mommy and talk about it later.”

Oliver was still pouting. “Mommy should just stay at home. She only causes trouble when she comes out.”

Selena sighed. “You shouldn’t say that, Oliver. Your mommy would be sad if she heard you.”

Oliver shot back, “She won’t be my mommy after she divorces Daddy!”

Isabel was heading to the restroom and passed by the main table. They couldn’t see her, but she could see them perfectly. And she heard every word Oliver said.

Dylan, who was with her, heard it too and scoffed, “He's a real troublemaker, isn't he?”

Isabel didn’t say anything. She quickly went to the restroom, touched up her makeup, washed her hands, and returned to old Mrs. Blackwell’s side.

The speeches were over; it was time to mingle with the guests.

As she helped old Mrs. Blackwell through the crowd, the guests offered polite words, but their eyes were full of gossip.

Mrs. Blackwell saw this and gritted her teeth in frustration. The last thing she wanted was for the high-society circle to know about her embarrassing daughter-in-law. The other wealthy wives would laugh at her.

She never imagined Oliver would rush onto the stage and expose Isabel and Adrian’s marriage. She didn't blame Oliver, of course. She was convinced Isabel had put him up to it.

Isabel had claimed she wasn't playing games and genuinely wanted a divorce, but Mrs. Blackwell had just found out they hadn’t even signed the papers yet. And now, showing up all dressed up at her mother-in-law's birthday party—what was this if not a ploy to get Adrian’s attention?

Isabel pressed her lips together, searching for Adrian in the crowd. But there were too many people surrounding old Mrs. Blackwell, and she couldn’t see him. The view of the main table was completely blocked.

“Grandma, you must be tired. Why don’t we sit down over there and chat?”

Since old Mrs. Blackwell was eighty, the other guests, eager to please, quickly made way for her to sit.

As they parted, Isabel saw the main table again, but Adrian wasn’t there. Oliver was gone too.

Selena said to her, “Oliver had some chocolate cake earlier and isn’t feeling well. Adrian took him upstairs to rest.”

Isabel’s face instantly turned cold. “He can’t have chocolate. It gives him an upset stomach.”
