Isabel carried a canvas tote bag she'd had for years. It was spacious, durable, and practical. Because she never bothered to switch bags, it still contained a small supply of emergency medicine.

She immediately rushed upstairs to find Adrian. She heard Oliver’s pained whimpers from down the hall. “Daddy, my stomach hurts.”

Adrian’s voice was firm but held a trace of gentleness. “The doctor will be here soon.”

Isabel burst into the room, poured a glass of warm water, and walked over to Oliver, placing a pill in his mouth.

But he spat it out, biting her finger in the process.

Isabel sucked in a sharp breath. She was in no mood to coax him. “If you don’t want your stomach to hurt,” she said, her voice stern, “then take the medicine!”

Startled, Oliver opened his mouth, and Isabel pushed the pill in.

Once he had swallowed it, her tense nerves eased slightly. She might not want him anymore, but she couldn’t stand by and watch him suffer.

Oliver slowly started to feel better, though his face was still pale. Isabel usually nagged him about this and that, but she had never been this fierce. He had only ever seen his mother be harsh with Auntie Selena.

He pursed his little lips, burrowed into Adrian’s arms, and buried his face.

Isabel stood to the side, waiting for the medicine to take effect. She had made it herself; it shouldn’t be expired. She hadn’t been gone from Halcyon Hills Residence for that long.

Adrian didn't look at her. He kept his eyes on Oliver, pulling out a tissue to wipe the sweat from the boy’s forehead.

“Mr. Blackwell.” The doctor arrived.

Adrian placed Oliver on the sofa so the doctor could examine him.

After the examination, the doctor looked surprised. “Mr. Blackwell, the young master seems to be fine...”

Isabel spoke before Adrian could. “I gave him some medicine.”

Mrs. Blackwell was choked with anger. “I’m not like her! If she had a kind bone in her body, would she have used a heart condition to force Adrian into marriage? And what about all her talk of divorce? Today, she made sure everyone knows she’s his wife!”

“You!”

Seeing old Mrs. Blackwell was about to lose her temper, Isabel quickly supported her, trying to calm her down.

Then she turned to the assembled Blackwells. “Since everyone is here, let’s clear things up. Adrian and I...”

“Shut up,” Adrian’s voice cut through the air, as sharp and cold as ice. He didn’t even glance at Isabel, but the words were for her.

He then addressed the rest of them. “The child needs to rest. Don’t argue in here.”

“Mom,” he said to Mrs. Blackwell. “Help Grandma back to the banquet hall. We can’t just leave our guests there. People will say the Blackwells are poor hosts.”

Mrs. Blackwell wanted to argue, but she met Adrian’s piercing gaze and had no choice but to lead old Mrs. Blackwell away.
