As Hanley mulled it over, a smug smile unknowingly crept onto his face.

Gennifer breathed a sigh of relief and quickly ushered him out of the café.

"During this time, you'd better have someone keep an eye on them. Watch out for any suspicious individuals nearby, and don't let them out of your sight for a second."

Ruby was on the phone, giving instructions to Garrison and Townsend. Just as she hung up, a call came in from a somewhat unexpected person.

Cassian.

Ruby furrowed her brow.

Why would he suddenly be calling her?

Normally, any information he uncovered during his investigations was relayed through Bennett. Why would he call her directly this time?

After a moment's thought, Ruby answered.

"Mr. Veyne, is there something I can help you with?"

Hearing the familiar yet cold voice on the other end, Cassian's heart, which he had taken several deep breaths to steady, felt as if it had been pricked by a needle, a dense ache spreading through him.

"My grandmother is coming to Quinborough. She specifically mentioned wanting to meet you."

He bit his lip, his voice low and clearly strained. "I... I haven't told her that we're divorced."

Ruby was caught off guard by his words, unsure how to react.

She knew that when she had insisted on marrying Cassian, it was her own grandmother who had personally approached the Veyne family's matriarch to make the match. In every sense, she had inconvenienced the old woman. And although she and Cassian hadn't been married for very long—just over a year and a half—she had never once paid the matriarch a visit.

"Cassian, we're divorced. I have no reason or standing to meet with your grandmother. You should just be honest with her."

Ruby pursed her lips.

As expected, a silence followed from the other end of the line.

"I told her you wouldn't want to. But she insisted that I ask you, even saying that even if we were divorced, she should still meet you at least once."

Cassian's voice was strained when he spoke again, as if he were forcing himself to say the words.

Ruby narrowed her eyes, surprised by the old woman's persistence.

She ran a hand through her hair in frustration, messing up her otherwise neat locks.

Even though she and Cassian were divorced, she was the one who had imposed on his grandmother in the first place. Now that the old woman was insisting on seeing her, it felt wrong to refuse.

Maybe she could meet her and then find an opportunity to tell her about the divorce herself.

Ruby sighed inwardly. "When does she arrive in Quinborough?"

"This afternoon."

Cassian's reply was quick and concise, yet Ruby inexplicably sensed a flicker of excitement and eagerness in his tone.
