Finally, the phone screen went dark.

Romaine lowered the phone, her face pale.

She never thought Victor would be so insistent on her leaving this time.

Her body was rigid, her fingertips tightening as she slowly clenched the phone in her palm, almost hard enough to shatter it.

Just then, Ruby was leaving Victor's office. As she walked down the long corridor toward the main entrance, she felt a faint breeze from behind her.

"Are you satisfied now?"

An ominous voice came from behind her.

Realizing the person was speaking to her, Ruby paused and glanced to the side, seeing a woman's face mostly shrouded in shadow.

Romaine was staring daggers at her, as if looking at an enemy.

Ruby found it completely baffling. She frowned, her eyes guarded. "Satisfied with what?"

"Victor is transferring me away from his side."

She gritted her teeth, her voice dripping with a venom that seemed to hiss from the depths of hell.

Ruby's expression tightened, but before she could speak, Hayley suddenly piped up beside her.

"What does you being transferred have to do with Ruby? Isn't it because you kept overstepping?"

She rolled her eyes.

Hayley had always believed in tormenting others, not herself, and she despised being guilt-tripped.

"Miss Romaine, please don't make a scene. We have things to do, so please step aside."

Fanny also took a slow step forward, positioning herself in front of Ruby.

Although her words were polite, her eyes were fixed on Romaine, her authority unmistakable.

Romaine had always been spoiled at home, only showing a respectful and proper demeanor in front of Victor. At her core, she was still a spoiled brat who threw tantrums.

Seeing the three of them acting this way, she scowled and snapped, "Ruby, are you telling me this has nothing to do with you? If it weren't for you, Victor would be taking me back to headquarters. Why did you have to come here today?"

She was on the verge of making a complete scene.

Ruby's face darkened.

She was no longer the good-tempered person she once was. Even back when she was a lawyer, she never backed down. Why would she let someone walk all over her now?

"Romaine, Victor is a reasonably patient man. He wouldn't have made such a request if you hadn't overstepped your bounds again and again. Besides, I am Victor's guest and you are his assistant. When I came to visit, your first duty should have been to inform him, not to make the decision for him and tell me to leave."

Ruby crossed her arms, using her height advantage to look down at the other woman, her eyes as cold as ice.

Ruby stared at her coldly. "Fanny and Hayley are right. Whatever is going on between Victor and me is our business. As his assistant, you have no right to question me."

"It won't do you any good."

With that final word, Ruby turned away.

Fanny shot a blank look at Romaine, who was still standing there, before following Ruby.

Hayley, however, gave an exaggerated eye-roll. Her gaze fell on Romaine's tightly clenched fists at her sides, and she made a "tsk-tsk" sound.

She didn't say a word, but the mockery was unmistakable.

Romaine's face was ashen, but Ruby was already in the car and driving away.

"You should have seen the look on her face."

Hayley, sitting in the passenger seat, turned eagerly to Ruby and Fanny, clapping her hands, her eyes filled with glee.

But Ruby wasn't in high spirits. She was slumped in her seat, her gaze already lost somewhere outside the window, her thoughts a mystery.

"You don't need to blame yourself too much."

Fanny spoke up suddenly.
