Ruby's fingers paused. She turned her head and saw Fanny's concerned expression.

She couldn't help but bite her lip.

Hayley also held her breath, the smile vanishing from her face, replaced by a serious look.

Fanny reached out, took her hand, and patted it gently. "Even though we have troubled Victor, it might sound selfish, but this was a mutual agreement. If you feel bad about it, you'd just be falling into Romaine's trap, wouldn't you?"

Ruby let out a slow sigh. "I'm fine."

Despite her words, her gaze remained distant, frequently drifting to the world outside the window.

"Back when I was a lawyer at Veyne & Co., Victor and I were close. When I was imprisoned, he broke ties with Cassian and went abroad. After all he's done for me, I'll always feel indebted to him."

At the time, Veyne & Co. was already a major corporation in all of Country Veytura. As a manager in the tech department, he had a bright future ahead of him, yet he gave it all up for her and went abroad to start over.

"Once this is all over, let's throw him a proper farewell dinner."

She stood quietly by the window, daring only to peek inside with one eye.

Victor was still hunched over his desk, his expression focused, a map spread out before him.

Romaine recognized it at once—it was the area map Fanny had given him.

It seemed to be a factory on the outskirts of Quinborough.

They actually expected Victor to sneak into a factory to find someone for them.

How could they?

Victor was a top-tier tech researcher. She never even let him handle the most menial tasks.

And yet he had gladly accepted their unreasonable requests.

The more she thought about it, the angrier she became, her arms trembling slightly.

This time, she knocked on the door.

"Come in."

But he was never like this with Ruby.

From what she knew, Ruby had only worked with him at Veyne & Co. for a year, whereas she had been by his side for over a year.

"Mr. Hargrove, it's only for a few more days. Please let me assist you."

With that, she stepped forward, intending to get Victor a fresh cup of tea.

But before her fingers could touch the cup, Victor moved it away and stood up. "Leave. I'm going to rest."

Romaine's hand froze in mid-air, but Victor acted as if he didn't see it. He strode to the door and paused. "Aren't you leaving?"

Romaine had no choice but to follow him out of the office.

Victor closed the door without giving her a second glance and headed straight for his room.

But Romaine, who had been trailing behind, suddenly stopped and turned back toward the office.

She glanced cautiously in the direction Victor had gone, making sure he was out of sight. A key, glinting ominously, appeared in her palm.

Under the dark sky, with the moon half-hidden by clouds, the only things that shone were the key in Romaine's hand and the light in her eyes.
