In the apartment.
"So, you finally decided to come home?"
Violet shot a sideways glance at Hanley.
Though they sat on the same sofa, one was on the left and the other on the right, with a large gap between them.
A placating smile immediately appeared on Hanley's face. "Alright, once things calm down, I'll spend all my time with you."
He reached out to hug Violet, but she pushed his hand away. "You always say that, but it's always 'something came up, something came up!'"
She glared at him.
Hanley's hand was left hanging in the air, and his smile stiffened.
But looking at her, he quickly adjusted and smiled again. "Violet, don't be like this. You know how busy I am right now. And with the Steele family here, you know how important this is. Don't make things difficult for me."
Violet’s words only made a wave of bitterness rise in her.
Perhaps it was because the baby's presence had become more pronounced lately, but her pregnancy hormones were making her emotional. Even though Hanley was just repeating what they had already agreed upon, she felt a knot of anger in her chest, ready to burst.
"I think you just want an excuse to stay there!" The images of the things she had received earlier that day flashed through her mind, and her eyes blurred with a mixture of hatred and tears.
She bit her lip hard, channeling all her emotions into a desperate need to lash out.
Hanley was already annoyed about having thrown away eight million dollars and had hoped for some comfort from Violet. Instead, he was met with a barrage of suspicion and accusations, and his face instantly darkened.
"Stop being unreasonable!"
He rubbed his temples, using his last shred of patience to warn her.
But Violet froze, staring at his cold face as a wave of panic washed over her.
"I've been with you since we were young! We were childhood sweethearts, and you promised you would marry me, but then you turned around and married Frieda! I supported you without any official status because I knew you wanted to use her for wealth and success. And this is how you treat me now?"
Her eyes were wide with disbelief.
But to Hanley, her voice was becoming increasingly grating. The once gentle and loving Violet had turned into a hysterical madwoman.
Why couldn't she just try to understand him?
Wasn't he doing all this to give her and their child a better life?
Hanley suddenly felt that the once-cozy apartment had become small and suffocating.
He couldn't stand it anymore. He slammed the door and left.
Her action was completely unexpected. Violet stared at the closed door, her eyes wide. She sat there for what felt like an eternity, but the door never opened again.

Fortunately, she finally felt the grip on her wrist slowly release.
Violet had lost consciousness.
Gayle quickly pried her hand away and checked her phone, only to find it was broken and wouldn't even turn on.
Annoyed, she shot a defiant glare at Violet, but then her eyes shifted to Ulysses Grayson's room.
The door was shut tight, and there was no sound from within. He was clearly unaware of what was happening in the living room.
Gayle glanced at Violet again to confirm she was unconscious, then tiptoed towards her room.
Soon, she found some fragments in the trash can.
Gayle quickly grabbed them, wrapped them in a napkin, and stuffed them into her pocket.
Just then, the wail of an ambulance siren sounded from downstairs.
*Knock, knock—*
The door was quickly knocked on.
"911 emergency services, did you call for an ambulance?"
