Cynthia had braced herself for a painful impact with the ground, shutting her eyes tight, but instead, she landed in a warm embrace. Her heart hammered against her ribs as she slowly opened her eyes to see Dominic's thunderous expression. She bit her lip and quickly scrambled out of his arms.

“What… what are you doing here?” she stammered, having just seen him unlock the villa’s gate with the password.

“Just checking to see what kind of trouble you’re stirring up now, you idiot,” Dominic retorted, his eyes scanning her. Seeing that she was only covered in a bit of dust and otherwise unharmed, he looked away and began brushing the dirt from his own suit.

Cynthia winced, embarrassed. Dominic was meticulous about his appearance, and she awkwardly reached out to help him. “Sorry about that…”

But as she patted his arm, she left a distinct, dusty handprint on his dark suit. She froze, staring first at the mark, then down at her own filthy hands.

Dominic’s gaze followed hers to the handprint on his sleeve. He said nothing, just looked at her.

It was beyond awkward.

“Sorry,” Cynthia said with a sheepish grin. “I forgot my hands got dirty from climbing the tree.”

She braced herself for his scorn or a sharp lecture, but he simply lowered his arm. “It’s fine,” he said, his voice surprisingly calm. “I’m used to it.”

Cynthia looked up at him, a little taken aback by his uncharacteristic patience. Then she remembered. Good news puts people in a good mood. He was heading back to The Capital tomorrow to sort out his marriage, so it made sense that he was feeling magnanimous.

That was all the answer she needed. Cynthia hurried to the elevator and pressed the button for the top floor. If Fred had received her laptop from Benedict, then Benedict’s real laptop must still be here. She remembered he hadn’t taken it with him when he moved out.

She searched the entire study but couldn't find it. Her only hope now lay within the books and files left behind.

Downstairs, Dominic waited. After a while, he glanced at his watch. Half an hour had passed. The elevator indicator showed it was still on the top floor, with no sign of moving. Frowning slightly, he rose from the sofa and headed upstairs.

When he reached the study doorway, he found Cynthia sitting cross-legged on the floor, surrounded by stacks of books.
