She had taken nearly every book off the shelves, flipping through them one by one. The files in front of her were neatly sorted, every folder opened and examined.

Dominic stood in the doorway, watching her. She was so focused she didn’t even glance his way.

He walked over, stopping beside her before crouching down and picking up a random file.

Cynthia finally looked up at him. “I’ve already checked those,” she said softly, pointing with a slender, pale finger toward another pile of documents. “Look over there,” she instructed boldly. “And be thorough. Benedict definitely would have considered this his safe house.”

Dominic glanced at her. “What makes you so sure?”

Cynthia nodded without hesitation. “My character.”

Dominic raised an eyebrow. “And what gives you so much confidence in that?”

“I was a perfectly qualified and respectful girlfriend,” Cynthia replied, not looking up. “I never once tried to pry into Benedict's secrets or check his phone. So, this place was his comfort zone. He would definitely…”

Dominic cut her off without mercy. “So comfortable that he kept his mistress right under your nose, and you never even noticed. That’s not qualified, that’s just plain stupid.”

He met her gaze, his answer immediate and cool. “She can look whenever she wants. A husband and wife are a single unit. There’s no room for so many secrets and so much personal space. If you want privacy, you should just stay single.”

Cynthia nodded in agreement. “Well,” she said with a small smile, “your future wife will be very lucky. She’ll feel very secure.”

Dominic’s gaze deepened as he looked at her, his voice low and tinged with ice. “I don’t know about lucky. From where I'm standing, she seems pretty stupid.”

Cynthia looked up at him, confused, but he simply placed a file in her hands. “Benedict really did trust you,” he said, his tone unreadable.
