"Yes, I do remember it."

Jasper didn't shrink away this time. Instead, he looked straight into her eyes, their affectionate, lingering gazes locking. "I always said that with a wife like you, a man could never ask for anything more in life."

"I'm glad you remember. With me by your side, you should be smiling yourself to sleep every night, don't you think?"

Alyssa let out a playful harrumph, though her eyes were brimming with tears.

"Lyse, I often wonder… if you had never met me, would your life be free of storms like these? If we hadn't become entangled, you wouldn't have to scheme or expend so much energy on these dangerous plots."

Jasper's throat tightened, his voice cracking slightly. "You could have lived a worry-free life as a wealthy heiress, free as a bird, with your father and your brothers protecting you under their wings. I often wonder—"

"Jasper, I believe in fate. It was fate that destined our lives to intersect. It was destiny that bound us together as husband and wife."

Alyssa stubbornly laced her fingers through his, the tears finally spilling over. "We were destined to be together forever, never to part. We will be together, even in death. So, there are no 'what-ifs.' Our meeting was written in the stars."
