We were doing this dance before, but I didn't want to watch Game of thrones with my mom. Goddess no.
"What are we watching?" Mom joined us with a giant bowl of popcorn.
"The mentalist." I clicked play.
"Too bad, The walking dead is pretty good." She replied.
I furrowed my eyebrows in confusion. My mom likes a show about zombies?
"Go, Mrs. Monroe!" Lucas laughed with excitement and extended his hand towards my mom, hoping for a friendly fist bump.
"Thank you." She nodded and high fived his fist.
I was still confused.
"I think that this show is a very correct way of showing us a future in which most of the human population dies because of a sickness. Just remember, the plague in Europe killed 60% of its population, reducing the world's population from an estimated 450 million to between 350 and 375 million in 1400, and if something like that were to happen in the future, that's how," She pointed towards the television. "people would act. They wouldn't help each other just because they are fellow humans, they would fight for survival. It's quite logical, Darwin already explained it - the survival of the fittest."
Wow. How optimistic.
"That is the best explanation of that show that I've ever heard." Lucas said with his mouth hanging open. He was impressed by my mom. Wow.
"The walking dead it is." I shook my head and switched the show.
After a few episodes of a quite disturbing television series, a bowl of popcorn and a dysfunctional conversation between my mom and Lucas, resulting in a mutual agreement of shooting one another if they turn into the living dead, mom finally decided to go get some groceries.
She'll be gone for twenty minutes.
But she didn't leave until after she gave us another warning about sexual intercourse. And the dangers of unsafe sex.
"So..." Lucas started with his honey-like voice.
"We...we can't." I swallowed.
"I know. What, did you think that twenty minutes will be enough?" He mocked me.
"I...um..." I felt blood warming up my face.
"Lil' kitty?"
"M?"
"Did you notice before?"
"What?"
"You were really relaxed after it." He rested his head on my shoulder, tickling my smell sensors with his intoxicating scent.
"What?" I asked, confused.
Lucas was already on the other side of the couch. Thank goddess for quick reflexes.
"A job?" I asked out of breath.
"Yes." She nodded and handed over a piece of paper to Lucas.
"Help wanted." Lucas read out loud. "We're looking for a bartender, a waiter or a waitress. All interested individuals can set up an appointment from hours 9AM - 3PM." He turned the paper to the other side. "The Black Cat Bar. It doesn't say if you have to have prior experiences." He commented absorbed in his own thoughts.
"That's what these job interviews are for. Besides, in these kind of low class jobs, you usually don't need any prior experience. Or an education."
We both stared at my mother. Does she have any idea how many people she just offended?
"I guess it can't hurt to try." Lucas smirked.
"It absolutely cannot. If you hurry, you might still catch the interviews." Said my mom, Lucas's knight in a shining armor.
"Where is this bar?" He asked.
"I don't know, I just saw this poster taped to a wall on my way to the store."
"I'll search for it." I said and ran to my room.
After a few restaurants, a voodoo store and an extremely weird strip club with the same name, I finally located the real Black Cat Bar. "It's in the Centre!" I yelled from my room. (The Centre is a 'pet name' for the centre of our city) "On the right side of the river, near the Dragon bridge." I went back to the living room, taking Lucas's jacket with me.
