"You're going to your dad's?" I asked, concerned. I recalled what happened the last time they encountered...It wasn't pretty. Or safe for that matter. "You shou..."
"I already went." He interrupted me.
"What?"
"I cut class." He presented the signed sheet to me.
"What?" I shook my head. "How..." I stared at him, not sure how to form a question.
"Well, he wasn't exactly happy about it." He sighed. "He called me an ungrateful brat, and a lot of other things, that I don't feel like repeating," A flash of pain danced across his face. "anyway, he said - good riddance, and signed the papers." He never looked so hurt before. Not even when he hit him. I knew he wanted to get away from his father, but I also knew that a part of him hoped that he would ask him to stay. That he would express any kind feeling towards him. Anything. "I'm officially an orphan." I could see tears forming at the bottom of his eyes as he quickly turned away.
I gently brushed my fingers across his cheek, pulling his face towards me. "You're not alone." I comforted him, gazing into his deep, dark, sad eyes. "You'll never be alone." I said firmly.
He frowned his face, clenching his teeth, and pulled me into a hug. It was like any other hug, and yet different. This time it felt like I was hugging him.
"Ah, enough with this bullshit." Lucas muttered into my neck. He raised his head and discretely wiped his eyes, turning away from me. "I have more happy news." He walked towards the bench with the school computers. "Look." He typed a few words in search and showed me the picture on the screen. It was a picture of an apartment.
"What is that?" I asked.
"My new place."
"What?"
"Well, not yet. I arranged a meeting with the landlord in an hour. I can't impose at your mom's anymore. What do you think?"
The thought of Lucas moving to his own place made me cringe. I mean, I was happy for him and yet...I didn't want him away from me. I wanted to keep him. So selfish. "I think..." I tried to say something positive, but I couldn't think of anything. I knew this would happen, but I had no idea that it would happen so fast. "How much is it?"
"300 per month, including expenses. Plus, my job is well paid, so I'll be fine with paying the rent and buying food every week." He smiled. He was genuinely happy.
"He unlocked the door of the apartment, and crossed his hands, waiting at the front door. "You kids have money for the rent?" I heard his annoyed voice from the background.
"Yes, I have a job." Lucas muttered as he was looking around.
"As long as you pay the rent on time, that's all I care about."
The apartment wasn't huge, but it wasn't small either. There was a small coat hanger in the short hallway, which led you into the biggest room, which consisted of a giant bed and a dining table with four chairs. On the left there was a small bathroom and on the right even smaller kitchen. The best part of the apartment was the tiny balcony with a view over the nearest park.
"So?" Lucas extended his hands, looking over towards me.
"I, um, I like it." I answered truthfully. I did like it. It wasn't perfect, but it was nice. It had...something. "The balcony is my favourite part."
"Mine's the bed." He winked.
