When Evander carried Charlotte back to the Gardenia Apartments, Lilith, who had been pacing nervously downstairs, rushed over. "Evander, is she—"
Her words died in her throat when she saw the lipstick mark on his neck.
"She drank too much," he said, not bothering to hide it as he lifted Charlotte from the car.
Lilith’s eyes widened in panic. "Evander, you can't carry her up there! We're staying in his apartment. What if he sees you?"
"He already has."
Lilith froze, her gaze following his.
Judd was getting out of another car, his timing impeccable.
She instinctively took two steps back, hardly daring to breathe.
Judd’s gaze fell on the sleeping Charlotte in Evander’s arms, then flickered to the mark on his neck. His eyelashes lowered as he coolly looked away. "Aren't you afraid of being recognized, Mr. Howard?"
"She's drunk. She won't recognize me," Evander replied, then met Judd’s eyes. "She's staying with you?"
Judd turned and walked into the building without a word.
Evander followed with Charlotte in his arms. Lilith snapped out of it and, seeing the three of them heading for the elevator, dashed after them. "Wait for me!"
Evander carried Charlotte to the bedroom, laid her down, and gently removed her shoes and socks.
He walked to the doorway and said to Lilith, "Take care of her."
"Oh, okay."
After Lilith went inside, Evander went to the living room. "Thanks," he said to Judd, then turned to leave.
Judd spoke, his voice quiet. "You're not worried I'll make a move?"
Evander waved a hand dismissively without looking back. "I trust your character, Mr. Carstairs."
…
Judd poured a glass of water and walked to the bedroom, standing outside the door for a moment before knocking.
Lilith opened it. He handed her the glass. "For her, when she wakes up."
"Thanks." Lilith took it.

"Oh, don't worry about it. I ordered breakfast, and it's waiting for you," Lilith said, leaving the room.
Charlotte hesitated for a second, then decided not to dwell on it.

Charlotte glanced at the time. "Hasn't Professor Carstairs come back?"
Lilith froze, awkwardly averting her gaze. "Oh, he came back. He and I carried you to your room last night. He left early this morning."
Thinking about last night made Lilith shudder. She had been sure she was about to witness a dramatic confrontation.
After breakfast, Charlotte received a text from an unknown number.
It was a photo of Vera, tied up, followed by an address.
Charlotte suddenly froze, the blood draining from her face.
