Three words immediately flashed in Charlotte's mind: Neely. It couldn't be anyone else.
She grabbed her coat and rushed out of the apartment.
"Charlotte, where are you going?" Lilith called after her.
She didn't answer.
Watching Charlotte hurry into the elevator, Lilith frowned in confusion before pulling out her phone and sending a quick message.
Once in her car, Charlotte tried calling Vera, but her phone went straight to voicemail. She then called the hospital, where the nurse on duty told her Vera had taken the day off.
It was her fault. She’d been careless. Vera was still staying at Norene's place and must have been targeted because of her.
Suddenly, she remembered something and dialed the number Officer Woods had given her.
The call connected quickly. "Hello, how can I help you?"
"I'm looking for Officer Woods. My name is Charlotte Sterling."
"One moment, please."
A few seconds later, Officer Woods's voice came on the line. "Miss Sterling?"
"I think my friend may have been kidnapped. They sent me a text."
Woods immediately alerted several of his subordinates. "Can you forward me the message?"
"Yes, but they've demanded I come alone, so I have to go first."
"Miss Sterling, cooperate with whatever they ask you to do. Try to stall for time, and I'll bring a team right away. Your safety is the top priority. Do you understand?"
"I will."
Charlotte hung up, took a deep breath, and pressed down on the accelerator.

Charlotte frowned. "You don't have to beat around the bush. Just say what you want."
"I like talking to people who get straight to the point." Neely set his cup down, his expression turning sly. "But you didn't call the police on your way here, did you?"
She flinched slightly. His question caught her completely off guard.
He caught her hesitation and let out a vicious laugh. "I knew you wouldn't play fair."
Before Charlotte could react, the two bodyguards seized her arms. Their grip was so strong she thought her arm might dislocate.
She bit her lip, forcing back the pain. "Even if you kill us, you won't get away."

"Bait? What bait? What are you talking ab—mmph!"
Before she could finish, one of the bodyguards slapped a piece of tape over her mouth. They tied her up and dragged her away.
