Yvonne was bone-tired from all the chaos at Litamark. Even though the Schultz house wasn’t exactly familiar territory, when you’re truly exhausted, any bed will do.

She slept like the dead.

When she finally woke, it was past ten in the morning. Xander had stayed by her side the whole time, quietly worrying she’d be starving after such a long sleep. But seeing how worn out she was, he couldn’t bring himself to wake her.

Yvonne sniffed and blinked awake. “You’re up already?”

“I saw you sleeping so well, I didn’t want to wake you,” Xander replied softly.

Now that she was finally awake, Yvonne felt more human again. She stretched, swung her legs off the bed, and said, “Alright, let’s get washed up and head out.”

“Head out?” Xander looked a little lost.

“We’re going home for breakfast,” Yvonne announced as if it was the most obvious thing in the world.

Xander just stared at her, speechless. Go home for breakfast? Not eat here with the Schultzes?

Yvonne couldn’t help laughing at the confusion on his face. “What’s the matter? Did you think you were back at the Quinn estate? Or did you actually believe the Schultzes were going to serve us breakfast?”

Xander’s expression clouded—clearly, the thought had never crossed his mind.

“Don’t forget,” Yvonne reminded him dryly, “this is stepmother territory now. Did you think you were back with your real mom?” If his own mother were running the house, it would be different. But with a stepmother... Yvonne’s dig about it had already been driving Tristan crazy since last night.
