Devin couldn’t help but laugh when he saw Annette, the lady who used to look down on him, now begging him like this.

“You… you’re begging me?” He looked her up and down, amusement flickering in his eyes. “Annette, are you serious right now?”

“So you’d do anything to protect your daughter-in-law? Anything at all?”

He leaned in, voice low. “What if I told you to hand over Alice instead? Trade your daughter for your daughter-in-law. Would you really do it?”

That question hung in the air, cold and cruel.

Wiona shuddered, a chill running down her back. If she felt like this, how much worse must it be for Annette as Alice’s mother?

“Mom!” Wiona grabbed Annette’s arm, snapping her out of her daze. She forced a shaky smile. “You don’t have to choose. Don’t give him what he wants.”

“Let me go see what he’s really after. All he wants is to scare me, force me to beg, trample us until he feels powerful. That’s all.”

She took a breath. “But so what? I’m Conrad’s wife, and you’re his mother. Even if we die, we don’t have to beg him. I think that’s what Dad and Grandpa would want too.”

Wiona turned, meeting Devin’s eyes. His face twisted, rage flickering behind his fake smile. He hated being challenged. He hated that Wiona refused to bow to him, and most of all, he hated that she could see right through him.

If he exploded now, he’d just be proving her right. So, as much as he wanted to lash out, Devin kept it together. He prided himself on being in control, on making every move look elegant. Just like all those years ago, when he’d enjoyed every minute of it.

He stood up slowly, still smiling. “If you don’t want me to force her to pick, why not come over yourself? Or, Annette, maybe you should crawl over here and beg me. Who knows, maybe I’ll go easy on you.”

Crawl and beg? The words hit Annette like a slap. Humiliation and anger burned on her face.
