Wiona could barely stay upright as she dropped to her knees, clinging desperately to her mother-in-law.
“Mom, please, I’m begging you. Don’t do this.”
“If you need to hate someone, hate me. Blame me instead!”
“Mom!”
The sound of Wiona’s voice finally pulled Annette back from the edge. She looked down at her pregnant daughter-in-law, kneeling before her, trying to help. In that moment, all of Annette’s strength gave out. She broke down, sobbing uncontrollably.
“Wiona… How could I ever hate you, sweetheart? I’m the one who failed Conrad. I don’t know what will happen next…”
She sounded so lost, so afraid. For a second, Annette wished she could just disappear, take Devin with her, just anything to keep her family safe. She’d do anything to protect her daughter-in-law, her unborn grandchildren, and Alice. Without them, how could this family possibly go on?
The chaos outside grew. Conrad’s coffin was forced open. The urn holding his ashes was shoved right into Devin’s hands.
Everyone watched, horrified and disgusted, as Devin twisted open the lid, tossed the ashes into the air, and then hurled the urn to the ground. It shattered, the ashes scattering across the grass and dirt.
Annette screamed, clutching her head, and collapsed in a faint.
Wiona threw her arms around her. “Mom! Mom! Phil, help!”
Phil broke free from Devin’s men and rushed over, helping carry her away. Giana hurried over, fishing silver needles out of her bag.
Wiona took a shaky breath, braced her hand against her belly, and pushed herself up from the ground.
She faced Devin. “Devin! Do you really think you’ve won? Look at all these people here. Everyone knows you faked the will. Are you going to silence every single one of us to keep your secret? Or do you seriously believe you can control Sullivan Group forever? Maybe you’ll get away with it for a while, but not forever. Do you know why?”
Wiona shoved aside the person blocking her, her eyes burning with hate and determination as she walked toward Devin, one step at a time.
“Because…”
