“Other than Mrs. Sullivan, she listens to him the most.”

“Mr. George… wait, Libby, are you okay?” The nurse caught herself.

Libby’s face was stormy. Her hands were clenched so tightly her knuckles turned white, and there was a sharp anger in her voice she didn’t even realize was there. “He’s a grown man, staying with her when she sleeps. Does that really seem right to you?”

“And nobody thinks this is a problem?”

The nurse stammered, “But… but she’s Miss Alice.”

“And from what I heard, it’s always Miss Alice who wakes up from nightmares and only wants Phil there.”

“Dr. Jason said Miss Alice doesn’t trust many people or care about much. We shouldn’t take away the few things that make her feel safe.”

“Libby, are you alright?”

She looked like he was about to fall apart. It made sence after everything she’d been through. She almost lost a hand, nearly broke a leg. If the doctors hadn’t been so skilled, she might not even be whole anymore.

“Leave,” Libby said quietly.

Her face was so dark, so tight with anger, it was hard to look at her. The second the nurse left, she swept everything off the bedside table. It all crashed to the floor.

“Phil.”

“If you ever hurt Alice, I’ll never forgive you.”

But under all that anger, she just felt empty. Libby lifted her good hand, pressing it to the cheek Alice had kissed. A deep, aching jealousy twisted in her chest.

A few days later, Wiona was finally allowed out of her room.

The first thing she did was visit Annette.

Annette looked exhausted, sitting up in bed, staring out the window at nothing. Wiona sat beside her and gently took her hand.

“I heard you haven’t been eating much. Look at you, you’ve lost so much weight.”

“In another two months, you are going to hold your two adorable grandbabies.”

Annette’s eyes only seemed to come alive when she saw Wiona.

“Wiona. You’re here. But why do you look thinner?”

Wiona laughed. “With this belly growing bigger every day, you still think I’m losing weight?”

“That’s just how mothers are. They can’t stand to see their children suffer.”

Annette’s expression softened. “So, you’re here to cheer me up.”
