Annette opened her mouth, but Wiona jumped in before she could say anything.

“Also, you have to talk to your son!” Wiona huffed. “Honestly, I don’t think he cares about me half as much as Dad cared about you. I haven’t even seen him these past few days. I was the last one to know he moved to a different room. Even Alice, that little traitor, hasn’t come to see me. I’m so mad I could scream!”

She waved her hands in the air, all dramatic. Annette quickly stood up and patted her back, trying to calm her down. “Alright, alright, I’ll have a talk with them. They’re out of line!”

The two linked arms and started downstairs. They had barely reached the bottom step when they bumped into Conrad.

He was standing outside the study talking to Peter. Hearing footsteps, he glanced over.

Wiona let out a loud “hmph,” turned away, and tried to breeze past him with Annette.

Conrad couldn’t help grinning.

“We’ll finish this later,” he told Peter, then headed straight for Wiona.

“Wiona.”

He reached out and caught her arm, but she yanked it away.

“Go on, Mr. Sullivan. You’re busy, right? So busy, even at home. Why bother looking for me?”

She waved him off, but her hand brushed his chest. Suddenly, Conrad sucked in a sharp breath.

Wiona frowned. Something was off. She turned to see his face had gone white. Only then did she realize she must have touched his wound.

“What’s wrong? I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to. Does it hurt? Where? Let me see…” She reached for his shirt collar.

Conrad caught her hand. “See, you do care about me.”

“Don’t ignore me, okay? It really hurts my heart…”

Wiona glared. She realized he was just messing with her.

She pulled her hand away, annoyed. “Conrad, I really don’t want to talk to you right now!”
