After Annette finally let those words out, a weight lifted from her chest. She felt almost like herself again.
Wiona came over with some antiseptic and ointment. She gently cleaned the cut on Annette’s palm, then held her hand, her voice soft and steady.
“Mom, I believe you. Every single word.”
“Devin’s gone now. He fell down that cliff. He’s not coming back.”
“And you… you should really look around. There’s still so much here, so many people and things worth loving and caring about.”
Annette opened her mouth, but Wiona jumped in before she could say anything.
“Also, you have to talk to your son!” Wiona huffed. “Honestly, I don’t think he cares about me half as much as Dad cared about you. I haven’t even seen him these past few days. I was the last one to know he moved to a different room. Even Alice, that little traitor, hasn’t come to see me. I’m so mad I could scream!”
She waved her hands in the air, all dramatic. Annette quickly stood up and patted her back, trying to calm her down. “Alright, alright, I’ll have a talk with them. They’re out of line!”
The flood of emotion seemed to bring Annette back to life. With Wiona by her side, she finally agreed to leave her room for a walk in the garden.
The two linked arms and started downstairs. They had barely reached the bottom step when they bumped into Conrad.
He was standing outside the study talking to Peter. Hearing footsteps, he glanced over.
Wiona let out a loud “hmph,” turned away, and tried to breeze past him with Annette.
Conrad couldn’t help grinning.
“We’ll finish this later,” he told Peter, then headed straight for Wiona.
“Wiona.”
He reached out and caught her arm, but she yanked it away.
“Go on, Mr. Sullivan. You’re busy, right? So busy, even at home. Why bother looking for me?”
She waved him off, but her hand brushed his chest. Suddenly, Conrad sucked in a sharp breath.
Wiona frowned. Something was off. She turned to see his face had gone white. Only then did she realize she must have touched his wound.
“What’s wrong? I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to. Does it hurt? Where? Let me see…” She reached for his shirt collar.
Conrad caught her hand. “See, you do care about me.”
“Don’t ignore me, okay? It really hurts my heart…”
Wiona glared. She realized he was just messing with her.
She pulled her hand away, annoyed. “Conrad, I really don’t want to talk to you right now!”
“Wiona, do you have any idea how much I’ve missed you?”
“Jason said if I didn’t keep some distance, my injury wouldn’t heal.”
“Not being able to hold you at night… I haven’t slept at all. It’s torture.”
“Come on, sweetheart. Let me make up for missing you.”
He slid his glasses off with one hand, leaned in, and kissed her. The kiss was deep, urgent, and desperate, as if neither of them ever wanted to let go. All the longing from their days apart poured into that moment.
Wiona didn’t pull away this time. She melted into him, her arms eventually wrapping around his neck. She had missed him too, more than she wanted to admit.
Then, just as things were heating up, the babies kicked from inside her belly—one on the left, one on the right. Wiona gasped, breaking the kiss.
They both looked down and started laughing.
Even though most of her anger had faded, Wiona said, “I’m not done with you. We’ll talk about this later.”
Conrad grinned. “No need to wait. Tonight works for me.”
He was almost completely healed now. Even if she saw his scars, they wouldn’t look so frightening. He was just done with the misery of being apart from her every night.
Wiona pouted, thinking, So his injury’s fine now, huh?
