“We’re planning to move to Country X in Southeast Asia,” Summer said. “We want to start over there.”
Wiona stared at her, caught off guard. “Country X?” She felt a wave of sadness hit her, the kind that comes with saying goodbye. “Isn’t this a bit sudden?” She glanced at both Summer and Cassian, worry clouding her eyes. “Are you sure? Why not Europe or Australia? Is it safe in Country X?”
She couldn’t help but think about Scott. Country X was so small. If he really wanted to find them, it wouldn’t be hard.
But Summer seemed calm and certain. She gave Wiona a gentle smile, not bothering to hide the truth. “Back when the Tucker family left Southeast Asia, they made some powerful enemies there. That’s why, no matter how big their business grew, they never touched that region again. The family barely ever goes back.” Her smile softened. “For Leo and me, that actually makes it the safest place to hide.”
Hearing that, Wiona realized Summer was right. Out of all the places they could go, Country X probably was the best—and safest—option.
Summer went on, “We’re actually leaving tomorrow.”
Wiona’s breath caught. “Tomorrow? Already?” She tried to process it, but it was hard. “Can’t you stay a little longer?”
She knew this day would come, but she thought she’d have more time. Her eyes stung, tears threatening to spill.
Summer looked just as sad. Their days at Hawthorne Hall had been so full of warmth. Mrs. Sullivan, Alice, the two babies, and especially Wiona, they always found little ways to make them feel at home. No one treated them like outsiders here. It really felt like family.
The estate was beautiful and comfortable. Leo had even said he wanted to live there forever. But that was just a dream.
“Wiona, every party has to end sometime,” Summer said softly. “My dad and I have been here long enough. It’s time we started our new life.” She sighed. “You know, after everything with Wilson, my dad’s been pulling away from his old friends. Things just aren’t the same. Besides you, there’s not much left for him here.”
Wiona forced a smile, even though her heart hurt. “Let me help arrange things for you. I’ll make sure you have a place to stay when you arrive…”
Summer stopped her, reaching out and squeezing her hand. “You’ve already done so much. Dad has friends there, so we’ll have a place to land. And we’re not broke. We’ll get our own house. Once we’re settled, you have to come visit, okay?”
