Wiona walked over and asked, “What’s going on?”

Conrad reached for her hand. “Come with me.”

The three of them went into the study. On the desk sat a wooden box, filled with old documents. Letters and notebooks, all looking worn and faded.

Wiona’s curiosity got the better of her. “What is all this?”

Conrad answered, “These are some letters Devin sent back over the years, and some of his handwriting from when he was a kid.”

It only took a second for Wiona to catch on. “You think… the handwriting?”

Conrad could always count on her to pick up on things quickly. That was part of why he enjoyed being with her so much. Sometimes she didn’t even need hints. She just knew.

He nodded. “The writing on the card… it looked familiar to me.”

“So even if he’s dead, I can’t let my guard down.”

“Let’s compare the samples. Maybe I’m just overthinking it.”

Annette stood by, looking pale. The whole thing felt impossible. How could a dead man send letters?

Wiona started opening some of the envelopes. The stamps were from France, and there were bits of French mixed in with the English. The older letters were a mess, the handwriting barely legible, the words all jumbled together. Wiona squinted, trying to make sense of them.

Annette explained, “These are the letters he wrote to Jonathan when he was sent abroad.”

Wiona frowned. “Were they really that close? All these letters sound like he missed him a lot.”

Annette nodded. “They were. Jonathan was much older than Devin, so he practically raised him like a son.”

“Your grandfather was busy all the time, so Devin stuck to Jonathan, his older brother, even more.”

“Jonathan just thought Devin was a little bossy and moody as a kid, he never imagined…” Annette trailed off, sighing deeply.

She took a breath before continuing, “When we first got married, I didn’t think Devin was unstable. He’d get jealous if Jonathan and I were close, but he never did anything out of line.”

“It was only after Conrad was born that Devin’s jealousy took over. He couldn’t handle Daniel paying more attention to his own son.”

“If Conrad hadn’t been watched so closely, I’m afraid Devin would have hurt his own nephew a long time ago.”
