Damn! Cassian and his family were supposed to head out today, and somehow Wiona had let it slip her mind in all the chaos that morning.
But the rain had only just started, so how could there already be a landslide? She’d walked that mountain road more times than she could count, so she knew for a fact how sturdy those retaining walls were. There was no way they’d collapse for no reason.
Wiona hurried over and pulled open the door. “What about Cassian? Are they alright?”
Shelly nodded, trying to calm her. “Don’t worry, ma’am. They’re all fine. They’ve already turned around and are on their way back.”
Conrad came up beside her, voice sharp. “Phil! Get a search party out there right now. Whoever did this can’t have gone far. Find them. Don’t let them get away.”
Phil was already dialing his phone. “Yes, sir.”
That’s when it hit Wiona. Conrad was right. Someone had sabotaged the road. Were they trying to trap everyone inside Hawthorne Hall? Or did they know Summer and her family were leaving and wanted to stop them? Whatever the reason, anyone messing with Hawthorne Hall had picked the wrong fight.
Sudden thunder crashed and lightning flashed outside, the storm coming down even harder. It scared the twins so much that Wiona could hear their cries all the way from the first floor.
She and Conrad shared a glance, then ran upstairs together.
Strangely enough, as soon as Wiona scooped up her boys, their cries started to fade. Conrad tried holding Derek, the younger one, but he just cried harder, little face scrunching up as his wails grew louder.
Conrad looked helpless. “I think they just want their mom.”
Wiona almost laughed in disbelief. She handed Kane, who was already settling down, over to Conrad and took Derek into her arms. Derek’s sobbing slowed, and he gazed up at her with wet, shining eyes.
Ada, the nanny, gave a gentle smile. “They can hear your heartbeat, you know. And you smell like home to them. Storms like this make babies anxious, but if their mom’s close, they feel safe again.”
Conrad poked his son’s cheek. “What little troublemakers.”
Ada grinned. “Honestly, sir, these boys are the easiest babies I’ve ever cared for. They’re not clingy, they eat and sleep well, and they’re growing like weeds. No fuss at all.”
Wiona hugged her son tighter and gave Conrad a look. “See? They’re perfect. No crying through the night or colic or any of that scary stuff. The house is so quiet sometimes I have to check they’re still breathing. You should count your blessings.”
Conrad just stood there, speechless.
Great. Now his wife was giving him the evil eye for doubting their perfect babies. He had definitely lost this round.
Once the twins had calmed down, Cassian and his family made it back home. They all seemed on edge, frustrated that their trip had been cut short.
Wiona tried to reassure them. “It’s going to be okay. It’s just a delay. With this rain, flights would have been delayed anyway. We’ll just reschedule for tomorrow.”
