When Nathaniel returned home, he called me.
Seeing his name pop up, my eyes blurred with tears. I took a deep breath and answered.
"Hey babe, I'm home from work. I bought your favorite breakfast," he said.
"I'm busy today and got to the office early. Just eat without me," I replied.
"Alright then. I will wait for you to come home and make you delicious food." His voice sounded dejected.
I nodded and hung up.
I decided to take a day off from work to see where Nathaniel went every day and figure out what was really going on.
I found a café across the street and sat down.
By noon, Nathaniel finally came out. He got into the Bentley, and I quickly put on a mask and flagged down a taxi to follow him.
We arrived at a high-end restaurant.
The valet rushed to open the car door as Nathaniel stepped out, tossing the keys. It was clear he frequented this place.
I cautiously followed behind him and watched as he entered a private room filled with several young men, all sharply dressed and looking like rich heirs.
I pulled out my phone and pretended to be making a call in the hallway.
They ordered an extravagant feast-lobster, king crab, all kinds of deluxe dishes I'd only ever seen on TV.
Meanwhile, Nathaniel wouldn't even let us toss our leftover food at home, saying we could save it for the next meal.
Soon, laughter erupted from the private room.
"Mr. Cary, every time I see you in those shabby clothes, I can't help but laugh. You're a millionaire heir."
"How long do you plan to keep up this act? Don't tell me you've actually fallen for that country bumpkin, Celeste."
"Come on. Samantha ditched Mr. Cary to go abroad for an acting career. She deserves it!"
"You guys have no idea-Mr. Cary married that nobody just to get back at Samantha."
I felt my body shudder, almost losing my balance.
Not only did he not love me, but he also used me to take revenge on another woman.
I clutched my chest, my heart aching like it was about to shatter.
That woman, Samantha, was his first love. When Nathaniel's parents opposed her acting career, she dumped him.
Ever since then, Nathaniel has thought women are all the same-he took pleasure in toying with their feelings. He cycled through girlfriends and finally decided to marry someone to get back at Samantha while worrying that his wife might be after his money, so he chose a seemingly ordinary woman like me.
It's Samantha had hurt him, how could he trample on my self-esteem and my feelings like that?!
A wave of suffocation hit me, and just as I turned to leave, I heard someone inside ask Nathaniel, "Mr. Cary, what if Celeste finds out who you really are?"
