"...Call me when you're done washing up." Shanley's rationality instantly snapped back. He frowned slightly, pulling the door shut behind him as he left. He had to chug two glasses of ice water just to suppress the impulsive, wicked fire burning in his veins. This girl was getting bolder by the minute! And the worst part was... he was utterly and hopelessly at her mercy.
After her shower, Juniper walked back to the bed in her pajamas, her hair still dripping wet. Shanley followed closely behind, holding a hairdryer. They were already so accustomed to this routine that they didn't even need to speak to know what the other was thinking.
Once her hair was dry, Shanley, who had showered in the guest bathroom, naturally slipped under the covers next to her. He expertly assumed his role as her personal "sleep-aid pillow."
"Juniper..." Shanley took her hand, bringing it to his lips for a tender kiss. He pondered for a long time before finally mustering the courage to whisper, "Once we find your parents, let's get married. How does that sound?"
The only response he got was the quiet stillness of the room and the girl's soft, even breathing. Shanley looked down, only to find the young woman sleeping peacefully against his chest. When had she fallen asleep? Did she even hear a word he just said?
"Alright, sweet dreams," Shanley chuckled helplessly, pulling the blanket up over her. What a heartless little thing. Then, as if something else crossed his mind, he picked up her hand again, studying it intently. His eyes grew dark and profound. This hand looked a little too bare. It was missing something.
The next day, Juniper walked into her classroom right as the bell rang.
"Juniper, you're finally here!" Hattie scooted over the second she sat down, immediately launching into a breathless tirade. She was highly animated, gesturing wildly, her tone shifting from excited to furious.
"Hold on," Juniper interrupted her grumbling with a raised eyebrow and a light laugh. "Are you saying Sheryl wants to settle the score with me?"
