Shelly was shaking all over. It wasn’t just fear, but the kind of shock that made her feel like her whole world had just been ripped apart.

Ever since she married into the Nelson family, Shelly had done everything she could to secure her spot as the lady of the house, always putting on the perfect stepmother act. James looked down at her hand wrapped around his arm. It was a hand that had never done a day of hard work, always perfectly manicured. Yet this same hand had pushed him away so many times before.

He didn’t show any emotion as he lifted his other hand and slowly peeled her fingers off, one by one.

“That’s my problem,” he said. He straightened his sleeve, sounding like he was speaking to a stranger. “You should worry about yourself, Mother. Don’t ask questions you shouldn’t, don’t get involved in things that aren’t your business. Otherwise, you might get burned and lose whatever dignity you have left.”

He didn’t look back. He pulled the door open and walked out, heading straight for the assistant’s office to start handling the transition.

Shelly was left alone in the empty office. She just stood there, frozen, as a cold chill crept up her spine.
