The next morning, Emmy woke up sweating. It was like she’d spent the night hugging a living furnace, wrapped up in steady, overwhelming heat. Sunlight was already pouring through the cracks in the curtains, filling the room with bright, golden light. But James was still fast asleep.

He hadn’t moved from his spot, still holding her close just like he had the night before, his arms completely around her. His breathing was deep and rough, almost ragged. Emmy realized all that heat was coming from him.

Her heart skipped a beat. She gently pushed at his arm, trying to slip away, but as soon as she moved, his hand tightened around her, pulling her right back in.

“James?” she whispered.

He didn’t wake up. His eyebrows were drawn together in a frown, like he was troubled even in his sleep. Emmy managed to wriggle her hand free and pressed it to his forehead. It was burning hot.

“Oh my god… you’re burning up,” she gasped. His skin was blazing. She guessed his fever had to be at least a hundred and two. “James, wake up! You have a fever!”

She shook him a little harder. Slowly, James opened his eyes. His usual sharp gaze was hazy and unfocused, drifting over her face like he was struggling to remember where he was.

“…Can I just sleep a little longer?” His voice was so hoarse it was barely more than a rasp.

Emmy tossed off the blanket in a panic. “You’re seriously hot. You need to get up. We have to do something.”

But before she could move, James caught her wrist and closed his eyes again, pressing his burning forehead into the crook of her neck. “I’m fine,” he mumbled, his breath scorching against her skin. “It’ll go away if I sleep.”

“No way.” Emmy tried to sit up, her voice sharp and determined. “Stop being stubborn. Let go, I’m getting you some medicine.”

After some effort, she managed to wiggle out of his arms. Just when she was about to get out of bed, he pulled her back against him from behind.

She thought back to their time at Star Jewel. He’d been hurt so badly he needed a wheelchair, but she couldn’t remember him ever taking anything but the bare minimum. He always acted like it was nothing.

“I just get through it.” For once, he actually looked awkward, his tough-guy mask slipping. He pressed his face into her neck, his voice low and sticky against her skin. “It makes your immune system stronger. If it gets really bad… I get a shot. One shot and it’s done. No need to suffer.”

Emmy was at a loss for words. She’d never met a man who would rather get an injection than swallow a little medicine. She was about to push the issue, but his hand started wandering again.

His fingers slid up from her waist along her spine. His lips began trailing hot, insistent kisses from the corner of her mouth to below her ear and down her neck. There was a possessiveness in the way he touched her, a heat that had nothing to do with his fever.

“James… stop…” Emmy’s whole body went weak, her breathing ragged. She felt the clasp of her bra give way, his hands moving with way too much practiced ease.

A shaky moan slipped from her lips. Her voice was little more than a whisper, trembling and breathless. “You’re burning up… Don’t do this… And… these walls aren’t soundproof…”
