The air in the tiny dorm room was thick, heavy with the kind of heat that made your heart race. Every breath felt warmer than the last.
James said nothing. He just kissed her, a little rough, a little desperate, his lips and teeth moving over her skin without any plan, just pure need. Emmy felt like her whole body might just melt right there. She tangled her fingers in his short hair, held his head close, tilted her neck to give him more. Her breathing got faster, sharper, their world shrinking to nothing but the two of them...
Then came the buzz. Loud, insistent, totally out of place.
Buzz. Buzz.
It rattled from the metal locker in the corner, the noise echoing until it sounded like someone was banging on the walls. The sharp sound cut straight through the mood, and in a flash, Emmy snapped back to herself. All that heat and dizziness just drained away.
She tried nudging James, his face buried against her chest.
“James…”
He didn’t move. He was clearly ignoring the phone, pretending he didn’t even hear it. Emmy had to be a little more forceful, cupping his cheeks and making him look up.
“Is that your phone?”
James looked dazed, his eyes still wild with want. He was burning up, slower than usual, trying to piece together what was happening. He frowned at the buzzing, mumbled a curse, then finally let go of her and rolled to the side, chest heaving as he tried to catch his breath.
Even under the thick blanket, the evidence of his frustration was obvious. Emmy deliberately looked away, hurried to fix her clothes, refastening her bra with shaking hands.
The phone wouldn’t stop. It just kept buzzing, refusing to let go.
Emmy slipped out of bed and walked to the army green locker.
“What’s the code?” she called over her shoulder.
James didn’t even open his eyes. He just sighed, rested his arm over his forehead, and muttered a string of numbers, voice raspy.
She typed them in. The lock clicked open.
Inside, the black phone was still vibrating like it had a vendetta. The screen lit up a contact name in bold: [Superstar].
Emmy narrowed her eyes. Superstar? There was only one person in James’s life who could possibly earn that title. Mercedes.
She turned, holding up the phone, her voice neutral. “Superstar? Who’s that? Important enough for a special label?”
James was a little more awake now, but he didn’t bother to look at her. “Don’t answer it. Just hang up,” he said, voice rough.
All he wanted was for the noise to go away so he could get back to holding his wife.
Silence again, just for a moment. When Mercedes spoke, she sounded like she was laughing, but Emmy could hear the edge.
“Oh, it’s you, Emmy. You finally found time to see Nico? I was starting to think you were too busy for him.”
Emmy let out a soft laugh. “Of course I’m here. He’s my legal husband, after all. If I didn’t come, should I just leave everything to you, an outsider?”
“That wouldn’t look great if people talked, would it? And if the paparazzi caught you, they’d say you were chasing after a married man. That wouldn’t sound so nice, would it?”
On the other end, Mercedes’s breath caught, just for a second. But she was a pro, used to putting on a mask. She quickly found her balance again, voice all concern.
“How’s Nico? Is he hurt badly? I heard it was dangerous.”
Emmy glanced at James, still lying with his back to her.
“Don’t worry, Mercedes. He’s just fine.”
Mercedes let out a short laugh. “That’s good. As long as Nico’s okay, I can relax. Please, take good care of him, Emmy.”
Then the call ended, just like that.
