Watching this guy—usually so tough and in control—staring at her pocket like it was about to explode almost made Emmy burst out laughing. She managed to keep it together, though, pressing her lips together and forcing her face to stay serious. She dug around in her pocket for a while, then finally fished out a shiny pink candy and held it out to him.

Her voice softened, just a little. “Here. You earned it.”

James froze for a second, then let out this huge sigh, like he’d just survived something life-threatening. He took the candy, glanced up at her, and lowered his voice, sounding almost shy. “Emmy, you’re not still mad at me, are you?”

She turned her head away, making a small sound that was half a huff, half a laugh she was trying to hide.

James watched her, something dark flickering in his eyes. He peeled open the candy wrapper. The little piece of pink candy was almost see-through, and it smelled so sweet, like strawberries.

Emmy figured he was just going to eat it, so she started to look away. But in the next moment, James leaned over, slid his big hand behind her head, and pulled her closer.

Emmy stared up at the ceiling, dazed. It took her a moment to steady her breathing before she whispered, testing the waters, “Maybe… we could try somewhere else?”

James suddenly stopped moving. He just pressed his face deeper into her neck, breathing hard, trying to calm himself down with the soft scent of her skin.
