Emmy glanced at the serving window, then shook her head.

“No, it’s fine,” she said.

James took her hand and they headed out together.

As they walked through the cafeteria, Emmy could feel everyone watching. There was so much admiration in their eyes, mixed with obvious envy.

The second they stepped outside, the chatter behind them got loud.

“Wow, James really spoils his wife.”

“He’s carrying all that food in one hand and holding her with the other. That strength is unreal.”

“I always thought James was cold, but the way he takes care of his wife is something else.”

Emmy caught bits and pieces of their conversation. Her heart felt like it had melted, sweet and soft. She glanced at James and held his hand a little tighter.

Back at the dorm, James didn’t go straight to his room. He told Emmy to wait in the hallway, then grabbed the food containers and went door to door.

“Hey, Four, time to eat. Don’t sleep all day.”

“Make sure you take your meds after you eat. Don’t make me come chase you.”

“Six, after you’re done, go downstairs for your IV. Don’t sleep through it.”

He handed out meals one by one, always reminding each person about something.

Emmy stood quietly at the end of the hall, watching his tall figure moving back and forth between doors, always busy. In that moment, she saw a different kind of charm in him—the kind that comes from being a leader, someone everyone can count on.

When he was done, there were three meals left. He took Emmy’s hand again and they went to the ICU.

Abriella was sitting alone on a bench in the waiting area, staring off into space. When she saw them, she managed a weak smile.

The three of them sat around a small table to eat.

Abriella barely touched her food, just pushing it around with her fork, taking only a few bites. She looked even more exhausted than before, with dark circles under her eyes.

Emmy’s heart ached for her. She leaned in and said softly, “Abriella, try to eat a little more. If you get any weaker, how are you going to take care of Will?”

“If he wakes up and sees you like this, he’s going to be even more worried.”

Abriella pressed her lips together, managed to eat a couple more bites, then set her fork down.
