“You can talk back when you’re better,” she said, trying to sound tough. “If you don’t get better, if you even think about leaving me alone…” Her voice wobbled and then the tears started falling, big and hot. “I’ll marry someone else right away. I’ll take your money and find some guy who’s way better looking and way more obedient than you. I’ll have a ton of kids with him, and they’ll call some other man ‘Dad’… just to drive you crazy!”

But Will’s eyes still held that heavy guilt. He looked at her like he wanted to memorize every detail of her face, like he needed to burn her into his memory. He’d made it through. He was still here. “I’m going to get better,” he said, his voice quiet but firm. “And I’m going to have a kid with you. I promise.”
