Outside the ICU, Emmy wiped at her damp eyes but couldn’t help smiling as she watched Abriella lean in to kiss Will’s forehead. She turned away, slid her fingers around James’s little finger, and whispered, “Let’s go. We shouldn’t be here playing third wheel.”

James finally looked away from the scene inside, then gently took her hand in both of his, giving it a reassuring squeeze. “Yeah. Let’s head back.”

They slipped into the break room. As soon as the door closed, Emmy hooked her arms around James’s neck, tilting her face up to his with a mischievous sparkle in her eyes. “Feeling better now? Your teammate didn’t let you down.”

James’s arms circled her waist, his expression melting into something softer than she’d seen all day. He looked down at her, his voice a low rumble filled with pride. “Nope. He didn’t. He’s a good teammate. And a good husband, too.”

Emmy’s eyes danced as her fingers traced lazy circles at the base of his neck, toying with the short hair there. “Well, now that Will’s proven himself as a good husband, what about you?” She leaned in, her breath warm against his ear. “When are you going to do your husbandly duties?”

James froze, eyebrows drawn together as if he was seriously trying to figure out what she meant. “Duties?” For a second, it was like he was wondering if there was some new military ration he’d missed. But then he caught the teasing look in Emmy’s eyes and realization dawned. A spark flashed in his gaze.

He bent down, scooping her up under her knees in one smooth motion. She squealed, legs wrapping around his waist as he pinned her gently against the door. His hand supported her easily, gaze burning into hers. “You can’t wait, can you?”

His nose bumped hers, their faces so close she could feel the heat of his breath. Emmy’s ears burned bright red. She was always brave with her words, but when it came down to it, James’s energy was enough to make her heart race and her mind spin. There was something dangerously magnetic about him, something that made her want to fall right into him.

“Who says I can’t wait?” she tried to argue, though her voice was breathless. “You were so worried about Will, I thought you’d burst from holding it all in. So, as a reward for my hero, I decided to take the lead.” She slid her hand down from his shoulder, fingers trailing over his tense stomach in gentle circles. “But since you’re still hurt and shouldn’t be doing anything too intense, you don’t have to do anything tonight. Let me take care of you.”

James’s breathing grew ragged. He stared at her like he was seeing her for the first time. She’d just offered to help him. The shock and excitement on his face was even more intense than if he’d received the highest honor in the military. The heat in his eyes deepened, wild and almost uncontained.
