Emmy made a silent promise to herself. No matter how desperate he got in the future, she was never going to volunteer to help him with that again. Trying to keep up with a guy like him was just asking for trouble.
James set the food down on the table and strolled over, looking way too pleased with himself. He found her sprawled out on the bed, completely motionless, like she’d lost the will to live. He couldn’t help but laugh, reaching over to lightly tap her nose.
“You alright?”
With tremendous effort, Emmy rolled over and sat up. She held out her hands, still shaking a little, and glared at him. “Look at these. I don’t think I’ll ever see them the same way again. What do you think?”
James glanced at her hands, pale and a little red. For a moment he looked a bit guilty, but mostly he just seemed pleased, in that smug, satisfied way of his. He pulled up a chair, sat down, and without warning, swept her off the bed and into his lap.
“Sorry,” he said, starting to gently rub her sore wrists. He pressed his chin into the side of her neck, voice low and warm. “I’ve been holding back for months. I totally lost control. Your poor hands… I owe them.”
Emmy shot him a look but let him keep going. She had to admit, he was good at this. The way he massaged her hands was just right, and the ache started to fade.
Leaning into his chest, Emmy studied his sharply handsome face and blurted out the question that had been nagging at her. “Actually, I’ve always wondered something.”
She blinked at him. “How did you, you know, take care of things before?”
James paused, then gave her a puzzled look. “Take care of what?”
“Don’t play innocent,” Emmy said, raising an eyebrow. “You’re not that young. Before we got married, all those years… Don’t tell me you always just relied on your own hands?”
She knew all too well how much stamina he had. How did a guy like him manage without a woman for so long?
