Emmy, Harlene, and a couple of others were in a hurry, so they just grabbed some sandwiches and coffee before sliding into a table by the window. The older students were already wrapping up their breakfast when John and two other PhD students finally showed up, plates in hand, and sat down across from Emmy. Everyone looked a little tense, glancing at the time and eating fast.

Emmy blinked, then shook her head, sounding certain. “No, he’s swamped right now. The resort’s opening soon and, you know, he’s the chairman. He can’t get away.”

John frowned, obviously puzzled. Emmy noticed and set her coffee down. “Why? What’s this about?”

John hesitated. “I thought I saw someone upstairs who looked a lot like your husband. But maybe I was just seeing things.”

Emmy raised an eyebrow.

John leaned in even closer, nearly whispering, “I saw him with Mercedes. People are saying that guy is her boyfriend.”

John’s mind was spinning. He’d only seen Emmy’s husband once on a video call, but his sharp, handsome features were unforgettable. He was pretty sure it was the same guy. But if it was, then… was he cheating? John liked Emmy, but he didn’t want to be the one to expose something that painful. Still, the thought of it made him uneasy. If it was true, what would she do?

Emmy listened to the whole thing, then just laughed. “You definitely saw wrong. If he was here, I’d be the first to know.”
