She found herself staring into a pale, handsome face, gold-rimmed glasses perched on his nose. His eyes, narrow and deep behind the lenses, were locked on her, swirling with a fierce, unreadable emotion. Almost obsessive. It was Abis.

As soon as he noticed her looking up, whatever storm had been in his gaze faded. He let go of her waist right away, but he was still standing protectively by her side. His voice was low and soothing. “Are you alright? Did you get burned anywhere?”

Emmy shook her head and quickly stepped back, putting some space between them. “I’m fine… Thank you.”

John and Harlene finally snapped out of it and rushed over, looking pale and worried. “Oh my God, Emmy, are you okay?”

“That scared me to death! Did you get burned?”

Her friend had caught her as soon as she stumbled. Now she stood there, still holding her empty plate. There was a faint, apologetic smile on her face, but her eyes were full of smugness, as if she was annoyed her plan hadn’t worked.

“Sorry… The floor was slippery. I didn’t mean to,” she said, sounding casual.

Isabel walked over, dressed in a designer suit and wearing a polite, graceful smile. “I’m so sorry, Emmy. My teammate can be a bit clumsy. She lost her balance. I’m just glad you’re alright and that you didn’t get burned.”
