James couldn't hide the awkward look that flickered across his face. Honestly, it wasn’t even Will who told him the details. A few months back, out on a tough mission in the jungles of Southeast Asia, things had gotten rough. The stress was off the charts. Sometimes, just to let off steam, all the guys would end up together, talking trash and swapping exaggerated stories. That’s when Will decided to show off. Trying to cover up his embarrassment, James went on the offensive. “So Abriella told you, huh? She actually shared all that with you?”

Emmy didn’t even hesitate. “Is that so weird? Girls talk about everything. We share tips and give each other advice—that’s what best friends do. But a bunch of men sitting around talking about this kind of stuff? Doesn’t that seem strange to you… or maybe just a little gross?”

James frowned, quick to explain, “I didn’t talk to him about it. Will was bragging to the others. I just happened to overhear.”

Emmy muttered under her breath, “Will really has no filter. You’d think he’d worry about Abriella kicking his butt one day.”

James steered things back with a pointed look. “Anyway, either way, there’s no way we’re letting them beat us.”

She almost burst out laughing. His urge to win was bizarre, but kind of cute. She pushed his chest back, trying to look stern. “Okay, you win. I give up, all right? James, you’re amazing, you have the most stamina, you’re number one. But seriously, I’m exhausted. I’m sore in places I didn’t even know could get sore. This is harder than any workout I’ve ever done. We need to pace ourselves—what if one of us actually gets hurt? That wouldn’t do either of us any good. We should think about the long game, you know… sustainability!”

Emmy ran out of arguments. Thankfully, when James looked at her—really looked—he could see how tired she was. Eventually, he managed to rein himself back in.

“All right, I’ll give you a break for today.” He sounded defeated, but a smile tugged at his lips. “I’ve got a business meeting this afternoon anyway, so I’ll need to head out for a bit.”

Relief washed over her, so real she almost wanted to cheer. She practically shoved him to his feet. “Then go, go, go! Don’t keep anyone waiting on my account.”
