"Haa." He exhaled heavily right into Sylvia's face.
Sylvia recoiled in shock, immediately catching the crisp scent of mint toothpaste.
Steve wore a smug expression that practically begged for praise. "I did not sneak a smoke while washing up. It is all mint. Take another sniff if you do not believe me."
Speechless, Sylvia pushed his face away. "Alright. I know you did not smoke. You do not need to blow your breath in my face."
Taking advantage of the moment, Steve grasped her wrist and shamelessly sat down on the edge of the bed. "That will not do. What if you wake up in the middle of the night and doubt me again?" He patted the pillow in his arms, his eyes clear yet filled with an undeniable roguishness. "In order to accept the boss's inspection at any time, I have to sleep here tonight."
Sylvia shrank back, her voice jumping an octave. "No. Get out."
Watching her guarded expression, Steve acted as if he had just realized something. "Oh, right. We do not even count as friends right now, so sharing a bed really is inappropriate." He slowly stood up from the mattress. "Then I will sleep on the floor. Either way, I need to make sure you can see me at all times so you can easily check up on me."
Before Sylvia could voice her refusal, he neatly tossed his pillow onto the rug and stretched his tall frame out on the floor. Even though the heating was on, he was only wearing thin pajamas, and the floor still held a bit of a chill. Less than thirty seconds after lying down, Steve scrambled back up, rummaged through the closet to find a thick blanket, and lay back down. He wrapped himself completely from head to toe, leaving only his head exposed like a giant silkworm cocoon. He shuffled closer, leaning against the edge of the bed, and tilted his head up to wink at her.
Sitting on the bed, Sylvia stared at the dignified Mr. Michell acting in such a comical and shameless manner. She could not hold it in any longer. The tight corners of her mouth twitched, and a soft burst of laughter escaped her lips. She surprised even herself with that laugh.
