The only sound coming from the bathroom was the steady rush of water. Everything else was completely still. James felt his heart clench tight in his chest. Without thinking, he rose from his wheelchair and grabbed the doorknob.

The moment he pushed the door open, a wave of warm steam washed over him. The bathroom glowed with soft yellow light, and the bathtub was filled almost to the top. Right away, he saw Emmy. She was fast asleep, slumped against the edge of the tub, her head tilted to one side. She looked completely worn out, lost in a deep sleep.

Not trusting himself to linger, he quickly left the bathroom and pulled the door closed behind him. Leaning back against the wall, he tried to get his heart rate under control. After a while, when he finally felt normal again, he knocked softly on the door. His voice came out low and rough.

“Emmy, dinner’s ready.”

Inside, Emmy startled awake. Still half asleep, she rubbed her eyes, totally unaware of what just happened. When she heard James’s voice, she let out a huge yawn. Her words were muffled and sweet, still heavy with sleep.

“Okay... I’ll be out in a minute.”
