Once the first wind chime was finished, James stood up and hung it from the beam above the living room’s big window. A breeze drifted in, and the shells knocked together, sending a soft, tinkling sound through the room. It was crisp and sweet, almost like the ocean itself was singing.
“That sounds so pretty,” Emmy said, tilting her head up, her eyes shining with a smile. James watched her, thinking that nothing in the world could ever sound as lovely as her laughter.
Emmy went on to make two shell bracelets, each one put together with care and a great sense of style. After lunch she was just about to start another little project when James glanced at a message on his phone and looked up at her.
“Emmy, hold on a second. Your assistant just landed on the island.”
She froze for a moment, then her whole face lit up. “I need to change my clothes!” She’d been wearing pajamas all this time and there was no way she could meet her staff looking like that.
James nodded. “Alright, I’ll have them wait for you in the meeting room.”
Emmy moved fast. When she came out of the bedroom, she’d swapped her pajamas for a light blue dress that made her look fresh and put-together. She walked to the conference room and pushed open the door.
The room was wide and bright. James was sitting at the head of the table, and two men in sharp suits stood to the side. The moment Emmy walked in, the younger man with glasses jolted as if he’d been shocked. His eyes were red, like he’d been crying for hours.
“Mr. Lincoln!” His voice cracked and he choked on her name, tears welling up again. It was the kind of reaction that comes from seeing someone you thought you’d lost forever. There was relief, excitement and a flood of emotions all mixed up together.
The other man, a little older and steadier looking, stood with his hands clenched tight at his sides. He was trying to play it cool, but his eyes gave away how moved he was. He looked at Emmy with a complicated expression, but there was a deep respect in his gaze.
Danny sniffed and did his best to get back into work mode. “You don’t have to worry about Starlight Corporation. Everything’s going really well. The projects you signed off on before you disappeared have become the company’s major money-makers. Profits are way up...”
He rattled off the company’s progress, quick and organized, as if he was scared she might worry. When he finished, he took out a thick stack of reports from his briefcase and handed them to her carefully.
Emmy took them, but before she could even look, Joshua stepped forward. “Mr. Lincoln, these are the long-term investments you asked me to manage before you left. Here’s the detailed list of returns. They were all a big success.” He handed over another stack of files.
Emmy set both piles of documents on the table. She let out a little laugh, sounding just a bit overwhelmed. “I guess I’ll need a few days to get through all of this.”
