Emmy sat there, listening in a daze.

The more successful he became, the more enemies he made, until he was carrying a gun everywhere. She used to think he was just being dramatic, maybe even showing off. Emmy tightened her grip on the pistol and lifted her head. Her eyes were bright, almost sparkling.

James’s smile grew warmer as he watched her.

Something stirred in Emmy’s chest. She loaded the bullets back into the magazine like she’d done it a hundred times before. With a satisfying click, she slid it into the pistol. She held the gun in one hand, settling into a textbook shooting stance.

She glanced over at James, excitement bubbling up. “Can we go to the shooting range and try it out? I want to hear what it sounds like.”

James checked his watch. “It’s too late tonight. How about I take you tomorrow?”

The range was on the far side of the island. They’d have to drive or ride over, and if they left now, it’d be pitch black by the time they got there, impossible to really enjoy it.
