Clairessa’s POV

Fear unlike anything I had ever known gripped me, squeezing the air from my lungs. For a moment the thought was simple and brutal, this was my fault. I should never have shrugged off Marco’s threats.

I should have listened to Gabriel’s warnings about my safety and stayed with the security, not snuck off with Adrian. Stubbornness had a price, and I was paying for it now.

I never, not in a hundred nightmares, imagined Nicole and Marco working together. Paying off a waitress, cloning a phone, setting a trap, the ugly pieces fit together now. No wonder the waitress had been so eager. No wonder the juice tasted wrong, a slow drift of dizziness that pulled me under before I could think. She drugged me, and then everything went black.

Adrian must be frantic. Would he have swallowed his pride and called Gabriel? Have they called the police? Is Gabriel tearing the city apart trying to find me? I clung to that image like a lifeline, picturing him furious and desperate, doing whatever it took. Please, God, let them be looking. Please let them find me.

My hands moved to my stomach without thinking. The baby. God, the baby. I should have told Gabriel sooner. I had kept it close, selfish and scared, waiting for a perfect moment that never came. Now there was no perfect moment left, only the desperate hope that I would get out of this and that the small life inside me would still be safe.

I looked at Nicole and Marco, at the hard lines of their faces. Would telling them I was pregnant make them show compassion? The coldness in their eyes answered that for me. They would not care. They would turn my news into leverage. So I swallowed the thought and folded it inward, holding it close to my chest.

“Do it,” Nicole snapped, impatient. “Put the fucking bullet in her.”

Marco chuckled, low and cruel. He lifted the gun slowly, letting the movement drag the fear through the room, then aimed it at my forehead.

My whole body went rigid. Breath came in short, shallow bursts. Was this how I was going to die? Was this the end?

He dragged the cold steel down my cheek and slid it under my chin.

“I’m thinking,” he drawled, “where should I shoot her first, the head, the chest, or maybe…”

The gun slid down to my hand, pressed against my fingers until I flinched, “…maybe I’ll start small, break her, piece by piece.”

I shook my head violently. Adrenaline slammed through my limbs, every muscle straining as if sheer force could tear me free. My voice came out small and raw. “No, please. Please don’t… I’ll do anything.”

He reached up and brushed a finger along my cheek as if petting something delicate. “Anything?”

I swallowed hard, tears streaming down my face. “Yes. Anything.” The lie slipped out because my body wanted one thing above all, to stay alive. I prayed the word would buy me time, that Gabriel would come, that someone would find me.

Marco’s lips curled. “Look at her,” he sneered. “Skin so soft. Body so fresh. It would be a waste to end her so quickly.”

He leaned closer, his breath sour, the gun skimming down my arm. “No. I’ll kill her, but not before I keep my promise.”

Panic hit me like a wave. What promise? Dear God, what promise?

His free hand forced my legs apart. I recoiled as far as the ropes would allow, nausea and cold dread ripping through me.
