Before Kya could even answer, Henson shoved Conrad Vance away with an elbow. "Why don't you tell her to call you a psycho? Stop scaring her and back off!"

"So her name is Kya!" Conrad dodged around them, popping up on Kya's other side. "How old are you, Kya?"

Henson simply picked Kya up, holding her securely. "He's out of his mind, just ignore him."

Resting her chin on Henson's shoulder, Kya watched as Conrad pulled a ridiculous face at her. She immediately burst into a fit of adorable giggles.

Henson's friends were all thirteen or fourteen—energetic, rowdy, and always joking around. None of them meant any harm; they just thought she was incredibly cute and wanted to make her laugh.

The Lamont estate's backyard had a playground built for Henson when he was little, complete with slides and a castle. Later on, they had added an obstacle course with climbing nets, monkey bars, and a rock wall.

Once they arrived, the boys started putting the final touches on the surprise they had planned for Norah's birthday.

Kya was utterly fascinated by all the gadgets they were tinkering with, toddling in circles around Henson as he worked.

Conrad absolutely adored having a little girl around, especially since his mom had only given him a little brother.

As soon as he finished his part of the setup, he hurried over to entertain her. "Hey Kya, want me to take you down the slide? The super tall one over there, see it?"

Kya gripped Henson's sleeve tight, her big eyes locked onto Conrad as she vigorously shook her head. Her shyness only made her look more adorable.

The pure trust and reliance in the little girl's reaction gave Henson a massive ego boost. He tossed his tools at Conrad, stood up, and took her hand, leading her toward the playground. "I'll take you."

Kya happily bounced along beside him.

The slide was massive, accessible by both stairs and a rope climbing net. Henson took her to the net.

Kya was fearless and full of energy, scrambling up with her hands and feet. Her clumsy, funny movements had Henson laughing out loud.

But once they reached the top—nearly three stories high—she froze, suddenly terrified, gripping the railing and refusing to move.

Henson scooped her up and walked over to the top of the slide. Sitting down, he pulled her securely into his lap and they shot down the chute.

They flew down the slide at top speed. Kya clung to Henson in pure panic, her little feet flexed tight, but the second they hit the ground, she sprang up, squealing with adrenaline.
