"Exactly! An ordinary person could never come up with such a brilliant plan!" Grandpa Wallace boasted proudly.

"Oh, definitely. You are far from ordinary," Marina muttered.

"Don't give me that nonsense about not wanting to date right now," Grandpa Wallace pushed. "Just tell me, what do you think of Kane?"

Marina took a steadying breath. "Then I'll be direct. I rejected him."

Grandpa Wallace sounded thoroughly annoyed. "Is this because of that Carson Foster?"

Marina lowered her eyes. "Of course not!"

"Then why?"

"There's no reason. I just don't want to date anyone right now!"

A voice in the background called out to her grandfather. Grandpa Wallace yelled back a confirmation, then returned to the phone. "Arthur is calling me to play chess. I'm hanging up. Take good care of that swan, don't let it starve! And you better think carefully about Kane!"

"I'm not thinking about—"

Before Marina could finish, the line went dead.

She slumped against the couch, entering a staring contest with the bird on the coffee table. Her headache was quickly evolving into a migraine.

How the hell was she supposed to take care of this thing?

An idea sparked. She quickly grabbed her phone and dialed the local Animal Protection Society, asking if they could take the swan.

The representative asked her to send a photo. A few minutes later, the woman called back, her tone apologetic. "I'm so sorry, but our rescue center is completely at capacity right now. We don't have the space to take it in."

"Can I just release it into the wild?" Marina asked desperately.

"Technically, yes. But looking at your photo, this bird was clearly raised in captivity and hasn't reached adulthood yet. If you release it into the wild now, it likely won't know how to forage for food and will starve. I highly recommend you keep it for a little while longer."

Marina sighed in defeat. "Fine."

"I'll post its photo on our network," the rep added. "If anyone is willing to foster it, we'll contact you immediately!"
