Cole's eyes bore into mine. "Sure, I'll be a duke someday," he answered in a low voice, "and you'll be my, what, duchess?" His eyes seemed to darken and grow serious. I stumbled on the fourth count of the waltz and trampled on his foot by accident. We stopped dancing. He didn't even flinch from any pain as he continued to look at me questioningly, like it would be so impossible to believe that I didn't even want that title. I mean, yeah, the images in my mind a while ago were pretty nice but in all honesty, who'd even want to be a duchess? A pretty title for a price of being a slave for the rules of patrician society.

A laugh erupted from Cole's throat that I looked up in alarm at the unexpectedness of this. "Excuse me?" I demanded, confused.

"You got it right when you said my inner circle is a slave for the rules of society, but I prefer the word...stickler," he answered, his eyes gleaming with amusement. "Some anyway. Namely, my family."

I clapped my hand to my mouth in shock. "I didn't mean it. I'm so sorry."

"It's okay. You were just being honest. And I don't completely disagree with you."

A laugh burst forth from my lips. "One of these days, that contract is bound to be broken for good by one of your family members."

"Oh, I don't doubt it. Now come on, let me lead you again." He pulled me close once more as we made ourselves ready for another twirl around the ballroom. Surprisingly enough, I wasn't even dizzy at all! Maybe because I kept staring at my dance partner's beautiful face? I blushed at the thought and look at his chin instead.

"I hope I won't disappoint you guys on Saturday," I said quietly. "I'm so scared I might not look perfect on the dance floor."

"You already are."

I stepped on his foot from the words he uttered, but he didn't seem to mind at all.

I stared at the mirror in front of me, checking out the stranger staring right back. Nothing completely changed but the fact that person looking at me looked like a princess. Or a royal duchess. Something like that.
